Born Again: The Ethereal Breath That Renews Your Life from the Spirit
"Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." — John 3:5
Have you ever felt trapped in your own patterns? You try to change your attitude, let go of anxiety, or overcome a bad habit using only your willpower. Yet, sooner or later, you find yourself back at the starting point. It is a universal human experience: the exhaustion of trying to reform the outer self when what we truly need is a complete renewal from within.
This is the very restlessness that led Nicodemus, an influential religious leader, to seek Jesus under the cover of night. Their conversation, recorded in the gospel of John 3:1-21, offers us one of the most liberating truths of the Christian faith: the promise of being born again.
Nicodemus and the Limit of Human Effort
Nicodemus represented the peak of moral effort. He was an educated, respected man and a meticulous observer of religious laws. Yet, he sensed that something vital was missing. Jesus, knowing his heart, went straight to the point:
"Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." — John 3:3
To Nicodemus, this made no physical sense: "How can a man be born when he is old?". Jesus' response clarified that He was not speaking of a biological process, but of a spiritual transformation: "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:6).
Trying to live a life of divine peace and love using only the "flesh" (our own resources and willpower) is like trying to make a fish live outside of water. We need a completely new nature, a life generated directly by the Spirit of God.
The Wind of the Spirit: Freedom and Mystery
Jesus compares the work of the Spirit to the wind:
"The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." — John 3:8
This metaphor is beautiful and practical. We cannot control the wind, nor can we capture it with our hands, but we can see and feel its effects. In the same way, we cannot manipulate God or predict how He will transform a heart, but when the Holy Spirit moves in someone's life, the fruits are undeniable: an inexplicable peace, a love that forgives the unforgivable, and a hope that rises above any trial.
To be born of the Spirit means to surrender control. It is letting go of the struggle in our own strength and allowing the breath of God to guide our steps, cleanse us, and give us a new perspective on life.
Three Steps to Live in the Spirit Today
To experience this new birth and walk under the guidance of the Spirit daily, we can practice these habits:
- Acknowledge your limits: Humbly admit to God that you cannot transform your life or emotions on your own. This surrender is not defeat; it is the first step toward true strength.
- Invite the Holy Spirit into your routine: Before starting your day, pause and say: "Holy Spirit, today I surrender my will to you. Blow through me and guide my steps".
- Feed on the Truth: Read and meditate on God's Word. It is the cleansing water Jesus spoke of, which purifies our mind and renews our understanding.
